Decorative LED Filament Edison Light Bulbs (2024)

LED filament bulbs imitate incandescent bulbs' appearance and light dispersal while utilizing LED technology to provide efficient lighting and reliable performance. LED filament bulbs, often referred to as Edison Bulbs, show the large glowing filaments through clear glass enclosures and resemble old-fashioned incandescents or vintage lights.

Differences Between LED Bulbs and LED Filament Bulbs

Filament LEDs differ from regular LEDs because instead of having one large LED or a group of tightly packed LEDs, they spread the LEDs across lines that resemble filaments for the traditional look of incandescents but with the benefits of LEDs. Many people choose LED filament bulbs because of their look, nostalgia, and novelty. They provide a traditional-style look while still emitting less heat, using less energy, and lasting longer.

How Do LED Filament Bulbs Work?

LED filament light bulbs differ from traditional incandescent filament bulbs in that they use a metal strip lined with LEDs to produce light instead of heating a filament. The LED strip is coated with a phosphor, typically encased in glass, creating a warmer yellow tone similar to incandescent bulbs. The LED strips are arranged to produce light in a 360° angle, replicating the same effect as incandescent bulbs. When switched on, the entire strip emits a uniform glow rather than individual diodes.

Why Choose LED Filament Bulbs over Traditional Incandescents?

LED Filament bulbs give the look of traditional incandescent bulbs while providing energy-efficient lighting and all the other benefits of traditional LED lighting. LED filament bulbs also have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs. In addition, incandescent bulbs are set to be banned in the United States in July 2023.

Types of LED Filament Bulbs

Base Sizes of LED Filament Bulbs

Candelabra

We offer E12 and E14 size bases for candelabra bulbs. These are great for sconces, lanterns, chandeliers, bistro and restaurant lighting, among many other applications.

Medium

We offer E26 and E27 medium-base filament bulbs. They are a reliable and unique lighting option for antique pendant lights and chandeliers, decorative light strands, patio lights, bistro lights, tent lighting, commercial light strings, outdoor wedding lights, or for any decorative applications.

Color Temperatures (CCT)

Most of our filament bulbs, also referred to as Edison bulbs, come in warm white temperatures ranging from 2000K-4000K. We offer natural white, warm white, and ultra-warm in a variety of wattages. We also offer an option with the choice of blue, green, orange, pink, purple, or red. Some bulbs are also dimmable to control the amount of light emitted.

Glass Type/Tint

Clear Glass

Clear glass LED filament bulbs give the look of traditional incandescent bulbs while reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Gold Tint

Gold tint bulbs give an even more old-fashioned or vintage look to a fixture and tend to give off a warmer, amber-type glow and are great for a romantic or antique look.

LED Edison Bulb Lumens

We offer a variety of LED filament or Edison bulbs with a range of lumen outputs. LED filament bulbs are designed to mimic old-fashioned light bulbs, and therefore, lumen output tends to be lower in these bulbs. Many times they are intended to be used in shadeless lamp fixtures, so they are not intended to be as bright as your usual LED light bulb. With our LED filament light bulbs, we offer lumen outputs up to 1000 lm.

Available LED Edison Bulb Sizes

B10 (Blunt Tip) Filament Bulbs

We offer two B10 Edison-style bulbs, one with a clear lens and one with a gold-tinted lens, for a more old-fashioned candelabra look. These are great for bistro lights, large tents, decorative wedding lights, decorative light strands, commercial lighting strings, chandeliers, and ornamental fixtures.

FAQs

What is the filament in Edison's light bulb? ›

“At the time, many researchers were working on the development of incandescent light bulbs, when in 1879 Edison succeeded in lighting a bulb using a filament made from carbonized cotton yarn, which he improved to allow for 40 hours continuous burning.

Can you replace Edison bulbs with LED? ›

100w incandescent can be replaced by a 23-30w CFL or a 16-20w LED; similarly, if replaced with an LED, running 3 hrs a day, that will save you $16/yr or at 10 hrs, $54/yr.

Can you still buy incandescent Edison bulbs? ›

If you walk into a store, you won't find any of the traditional incandescent light bulbs originally patented by Thomas Edison. A federal law eliminated the sale of most incandescent and halogen lighting products.

What is the difference between filament LED and LED bulbs? ›

PRO TIP: LED filament bulbs generate less heat than traditional LEDs (which still emit significantly less heat than incandescent, halogen, or compact fluorescent bulbs) because their diodes are more spaced out. As a result, they dissipate heat more easily and often have even greater longevity than standard LEDs.

What is the filament in a light bulb called? ›

Incandescent light bulbs consist of an air-tight glass enclosure (the envelope, or bulb) with a filament of tungsten wire inside the bulb, through which an electric current is passed. Contact wires and a base with two (or more) conductors provide electrical connections to the filament.

What is special about Edison bulbs? ›

Edison lights offer owners the luxury of an antique design with the energy efficiency of LED technology, which would provide a longer lasting glow up to 15,000 hours.

Why are people replacing incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs? ›

LEDs contain no harmful mercury and use less energy to produce the same light output as other lamp alternatives, which reduce their impact on the environment. The carbon footprint of a person or household is directly related to the amount of electricity consumed.

Are LED Edison bulbs good? ›

The LED can be made to produce yellow warm colors like the Original Edison bulb or a cooler white color like the newer incandescent bulbs. The advantage of using LED Edison Bulbs is the fact that they last 5 times longer than the incandescent bulbs and use a fraction of the electricity the Original bulbs use.

How long do vintage Edison bulbs last? ›

Long-Lasting

Rated to last over 13 years based on 3-hours-per-day usage.

What are two disadvantages of filament light bulbs? ›

They consume a lot more energy than other type of lightbulbs now available that produce the same amount of light. They produce more heat than CFL or LED lights. The have a shorter expected life than some other bulbs as well.

How long do filament LED bulbs last? ›

In reality, LED's typically last between 20,000 to 60,000 hours depending on the type and quality. The lifespan or L70 of LED lights can vary depending on several factors. One of the main factors is the quality of the light itself.

Why are LEDs replacing filament bulbs? ›

They are better for the environment

LED light bulbs use up to 85% less electricity than traditional light bulbs and 95% of that energy is converted to light with only 5% wasted as heat. Not only does that energy efficiency save money on your bills, it also reduces your impact on the environment.

What was Thomas Edison's light bulb made of? ›

Edison decided to try a carbonized cotton thread filament. When voltage was applied to the completed bulb, it began to radiate a soft orange glow. Just about fifteen hours later, the filament finally burned out.

What is the filament in the bulb made of Why? ›

Filament of a bulb is made up of tungsten. Tungsten can become white hot and emit white light for a long time.

What is the filament of a flashlight bulb? ›

The tungsten filament or LED glows when electricity flows through it, thus producing visible light. Tungsten is a natural element and the tungsten filament is a very thin wire. Tungsten lamps must be replaces when the tungsten filament breaks.

What was the original bulb filament? ›

In 1879, Edison patented a prototype of the carbon filament bulb. His prototype emitted 16 watts and was capable of burning for over 1200 hours, but the bamboo filament would eventually be replaced with the tungsten filament still use today.
