How to make mint water

This mint water recipe requires only a bit of hands on time: it just requires some extra time to steep the mint leaves and let it chill. Make this on an evening or weeknight when you have a few extra minutes to spare.

You’ll use the mint in this recipe in two ways: first, you’ll steep it in hot water for 15 minutes to concentrate the flavor. Then, you’ll use additional fresh mint as a garnish. Here’s how to make mint water:

  • Place ¼ cup mint leaves in 1 cup boiling water and allow it to seep for 15 minutes.
  • Stir in 2 ice cubes and allow the water to come to lukewarm.
  • Pour the water in a pitcher and add 7 cups cold water. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Cheater tip: This mint water actually tastes pretty good right away: so if you’re in a rush, you could serve immediately. Just use very cold water; you wouldn’t want to dilute it with ice cubes.

How to grow fresh herbs

This mint water uses lots of fresh mint: and it’s so much more fun to grow it yourself! We grow herbs all summer long, and it’s one of the most satisfying things to run out to the garden and harvest a few herbs. You don’t even need garden space: you can just grow herbs in pots as long as you have a sunny ledge! And adding herbs to your cooking is a healthy flavor addition, without adding calories. Why drink mint water?

First of all: it’s incredibly refreshing! The aromatic flavor of this mint water is reason alone. But also, drinking loads of water is always a good thing! It’s fantastic for your health. Mint water seems like something much more special than just tap water, which makes it a great substitute for soda or other sugary drinks. It has no sugar at all: it’s just herbs and water!

Also, if you like to drink lemon water or lime water but are worried about erosion of the enamel of your teeth, mint water is a great alternative.

How long does mint water last?

Mint water lasts for about 1 day in the refrigerator. The flavor improves and intensifies during the 1 hour of refrigerating, and even for a few hours after. The flavor is best within 1 day, so it’s perfect for serving at a party. If you’re drinking it just for yourself, it’s a good way to motivate yourself to drink a full 8 cups of water in a day! Or you could make a smaller batch.
